Obviously there are issues to be balanced when a Council allows activities outside of the normal “residential” sort in a residential area.
But in an inner city area like Richmond, where there are so many commercial entities close by, in the so-called “Arts Capital” of Australia – you’d have to think the onus should be on those opposing such a venture to really show how inappropriate it was. Yet I fear in this case its the reverse – at the first show of opposition, a Council might simply shut down a new venture, hoping to avoid any “controversy”.
Setting up a small venue for theatre is *important* and *difficult* work – who would challenge the worth of the Storeroom in Fitzroy? Who would have thought they would have to close down?

I’m not so sure about the council salary part but as for everything else you’ve said Augusta I’m humbled – thank you thank you thank you. I will not comment on the issues raised here, rather will leave them to your readers to discuss or I’m happy to discuss on phone or email but I would like to share the good news, for those yet to be made aware, that MKA is temporarily taking over a space in the QV Building (a shopping centre of all things) in the middle of Melbourne City and we’ll be there for the rest of the month to keep our Open Season of 25 plays alive – MKA will not let down the public and we will not let down the playwrights we’ve promised to support.
I’ll see you in Melbourne when next you’re here Augusta, we’ll have that dinner and I hope BSN was a wild success!
