I guess there is always the thought that “too much of a good thing” is by it’s nature too much and therefore bad.
For me, it is such a flexible, sliding rule – issues of money or resourcing sometimes are confused with status of an artist NOT the significance or needs of the art itself.
I think it is terrible that art is linked so much with status, financial, intellectual or otherwise.
I think it is a tragedy, in fact.
I guess what I am asking is, what is enough? Is it enough to be the best? Who much is enough? What is too much?
Do artists make art based on money or ideas?
What does having money/job security do to the ideas of artists? In what ways does having resources reduce the focus or drive of art?
Just rolling some questions around between my forefingers and thumb –
Not proposing an answer, nor a particular viewpoint –
Just a bit of Friday Philosophizing….

Can you have too much of a good thing?

I don’t think, when it comes to the arts, we can have too much of a good thing. Artists are a refelction of society/humanity. This alone provides a rich resource of study that we can present in artform. Australia has this rich tapestry of diversity. As an arts community we make do with the limited funds we have. I saw Snowtown today and If that is what a australian film can do with limited funds then imagine what we can do with the freedom of our artistic counterparts and contemporaries elsewhere. We have the talent, passion, desire, artisitic population and genius to make a consistently flourishing brilliant arts community…but the resources avaialiable (which are, granted, above decent) are like a lottery….it’s not exactly who’s the best, but who’s the luckiest.
