Thanks for writing in. It is always lovely to hear from you – especially as an actor who has been so integral in the development of so many new Australian plays.
And yes – I have great faith in the King Street Theatre that it can really make a splash – after all the heart and intention is definitely in the right place.
What I sincerely hope is that independent artists look for ways to develop their work and their writing… I think TRS’s Cut and Paste at the Old Fitz or even testing out a snippet at Griffringe is always great… and of course – why not turn to Parnassus Den for some work/listening to new work?
Anyway, always a delight to have your thoughts, Noel.

First impressions last and all that. Here’s hoping the upcoming shows will lift the reputation. You have hit the nail on the head (again) with your call for dramaturgy. Too often new plays in the independent sector are put into production without enough (or any) attention being paid to this important area of development, only to disappear without a trace. Of course the more worrying thought is that it may have had dramaturgy! And let’s not kid ourselves that this is a phenomenon purely of the independent theatre. The funded and commercial areas can both be victims of this rush to produce before ready malaise.

I have started trying to re-claim my weekends, and I broke my “no theatre on the weekends” rule for this.
I won’t be doing that again in a hurry.

I’m reading “All in all I think Matthew Blackwood Hume’s work as a writer would be best improved with the help of an experienced dramaturg.” as “Stop writing plays, dude, you’re rubbish at it.”
