Over the past few months I have been working with Sydney-based band “Greenlight” as a sort of director- an outside eye/ear. I was first approached by the drummer of the band Chris Simon, who I have known for years- (we met playing in a band back in 2000 I was singing and playing tenor sax and we have remained friends, jamming occasionally etc). And I thought I would write a little note about their music.
A blend of sounds part Radiohead and Sarah Blasko- the songwriting is strong- and has something to say. And their song Fish in the vein of rock revenge.
And the lyrics pack as much punch as the driving drums and base-
“Something new for you to feed on, pick me out of your teeth when you are done…”
“you were my life for too long, drilled holes in my head filled them with wrong…”
Screeching electric guitar by Ali Malik, steady bass lines by Nick Dracoulis coupled with Chris’s beats and melting melodies by vocalist Steph Green uncover the sweet anger when we’ve been done wrong by. And there is nothing like a good scream to let out the demons within whilst the confessional rings out above choral ghostly whispers.
Recently they have been recording a “mini-album” called Suns Burning Down which should be hot off the press in time for Newtown Festival (next weekend)- and at the next round of Emergenza, at the Factory Theatre in Enmore (semi-final No 6 Saturday 7th). I (of course) have had a pre-release listen and be reassured its not all revenge and discontent- but songs inspired by travel, by music, by love and love’s angry cousin rage.
Currently ranked 24th on triple J’s unearthed website I think they are very worth checking out- and I completely declare that I am biased! But you may become biased too especially if you love a bit of Inner-West Rock and have recently had your heart trampled by an undeserving fiend!
